Restoration & Extension

An exceptional heritage site undergoing transformation : the only museum ever designed by the great architect Victor Horta.

In 2016, the internationally renowned architectural firm Xaveer De Geyter (XGDA ) and Barbara Van der Wee, a Belgian architect specialising in the rehabilitation of Victor Horta’‘s buildings, were appointed to extend and restore the museum.

Listed and recognised as an exceptional heritage site in Wallonia, the museum is currently too small and no longer meets international conservation and exhibition standards. The preferred option is to limit work on the heritage section in order to restore all the original qualities of the architecture designed by Victor Horta, an international Art Nouveau figure. The central atrium, bathed in natural light, will become a new public space open to the city. The contemporary extension, perfectly suited to conserving and exhibiting the museum’‘s rich collections, will be characterised by a regular grid pattern, from which a three-storey structure will emerge, making the institution more visible in the city. The whole complex will cover a surface area of 7,800 m², with the aim of promoting and conserving works of art, welcoming the public and encouraging the site’‘s inclusion in the Eurometropolis and internationally.
