The only museum ever designed as such by the architect Victor Horta, the Museum of Fine Arts is recognised as one of Wallonia's outstanding heritage sites. The building's highly original turtle-shaped plan is an interesting example of the transition between Art Nouveau and Art Deco inspired Modernism. It is undoubtedly one of the very first prototypes of a modern museum on an international scale.
Its beautiful monumental facade in Tournai limestone features the famous plant scroll motifs that made the architect famous and inspired the Art Nouveau movement. The dynamic structure and clarity of its interior spaces are also remarkable, offering multiple, ever-changing perspectives, both towards the central atrium currently housing the sculptures and towards the various side and peripheral exhibition rooms displaying the paintings, which is what makes it so unique.
Lastly, the building is completely covered by glass roofs, which provide exceptional light in the form of diffused lighting.
